{"id":11993,"date":"2020-12-09T11:29:54","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T11:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/?post_type=news&amp;p=11993"},"modified":"2020-12-09T11:29:54","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T11:29:54","slug":"right-to-housing-backed-by-key-signatories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/cy\/news\/2020\/right-to-housing-backed-by-key-signatories\/","title":{"rendered":"Right to housing backed by key signatories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>THE campaign to recognise housing as a fundamental right in Wales has been boosted by the backing of key signatories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Back-the-Bill-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Back-the-Bill-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Back-the-Bill-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Back-the-Bill.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"pink-bordered btn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/policy-influencing\/backthebill\/\">Back the Bill here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Releasing the names of principal supporters on <strong>Human Rights Day (10 December)<\/strong> \u2013 including <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/policy-influencing\/backthebill\/#signatories\">signatories<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from housing, elected representatives and commissioners, academia, the charity and third sectors &#8211; \u2018Back the Bill\u2019 is demonstrating the breadth of support across Wales for introducing legislation. Last week, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cih.org\/news\/three-quarters-support-legal-right-to-housing-in-wales#:~:text=More%20than%20three%2Dquarters%20(77,new%20poll%20from%20CIH%20Cymru.&amp;text=Some%2077%20percent%20agreed%20with,with%2040%20percent%20agreeing%20strongly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polling undertaken by CIH Cymru<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in partnership with Cardiff University showed that 77% of people support a legal right to housing. \u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/policy-influencing\/backthebill\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>web page<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has also been launched which enables people to sign up to the campaign and to keep up to date on its latest developments.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Back the Bill\u2019 is a joint campaign run by housing charities Tai Pawb, CIH Cymru and Shelter Cymru following the commissioning of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/RightToHousing-ExecSummary-ENG.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>feasibility study<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in June 2018 in conjunction with Dr Simon Hoffman of Swansea University. The study provides a roadmap for incorporation of the right to adequate housing into Welsh law and how it could help address some of the key housing issues of the day, including security of tenancy, accessibility, affordability and homelessness. The recently-published Draft Bill sets out how such legislation could be realised, pushing focus and resource into housing and driving a systemic shift in policy approach that would reset the dial on the housing system in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>The call has already been met with support by Plaid Cymru, the Welsh Conservatives and the Welsh Liberal Democrats, each of which have pledged to introduce the right in their manifesto ahead of elections to the Senedd next May.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuregenerations.wales\/manifesto-for-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Manifesto for the Future<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Future Generations Commissioner, Sophie Howe,\u00a0calls for\u00a0Welsh Government to make housing a human right.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Supporting the call to \u2018Back the Bill\u2019,\u00a0Ms\u00a0Howe said:\u00a0\u201cA legal right to housing\u00a0is one of the biggest gifts we could give to future generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAffordable, safe, connected, energy-efficient homes help keep people well, and a right to housing in law\u00a0would help us meet the goals set by our unique Well-being of Future Generations Act,\u00a0preventing\u00a0homelessness,\u00a0lowering\u00a0the cost of running a home,\u00a0taking action\u00a0on the climate emergency\u00a0and\u00a0allowing us to\u00a0plan better for looking after people in old age.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Issuing a joint statement, the directors of the three organisations, Alicja Zalesinska (Tai Pawb), Matt Dicks (CIH Cymru) and Ruth Power (Shelter Cymru), added:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe believe that everyone should have a human right, underpinned by law, to access adequate and sustainable housing- this fundamental principle is at the core of any solution to the housing crisis in Wales. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are pleased to see the campaign going from strength to strength in receiving support from stakeholders across Wales \u2013 both inside and outside of the housing sector.
