I’ve also worked across other sectors. I’ve worked in Mental Health – setting up the 1st Black Mental Health Befriending Scheme “Awetu.” I’ve been a Sport Coach and Assessor – Coaching girls at grassroots and producing international players.

I’ve been a Consultant in Diversity and Inclusion for 30 years delivering supportive and engaging training. Let’s get started with the first question: what has been your personal leadership journey?

My leadership journey is deeply rooted in my lived experiences, commitment to social justice, and a passion for driving social change, especially through community building and advocacy for racial equity. Originally from Nigeria and now firmly grounded in Wales, I focus on creating inclusive spaces, fostering genuine community relationships, and advocating for equal representation across sectors.

Throughout my journey, I have led various initiatives to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion. I served as Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee at the Children’s Parliament in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria; as a Student Union Representative at the University of Calabar, Nigeria; and as an Institute Representative (ISS) at Erasmus University in the Netherlands. I have also managed projects like the Women Empowerment team at the Centre for African Justice in the Netherlands and led the Diverse5050 campaign with Women’s Equality Network (WEN) Wales where I advocated for equal and diverse representation for women especially from underrepresented groups in Welsh Politics.

Currently, as the Anti-Racism Manager at Tai Pawb, I lead the Deeds Not Words pledge to promote equitable housing rights and combat racial discrimination in housing. My focus across all these roles has been consistent: to amplify underrepresented voices and ensure their inclusion in decision-making at every level.

Why is it important to celebrate Black leaders during Black History Month?

Black History Month is essential because it celebrates identity, the invaluable contributions of Black people and communities to society, both past and present. In Wales and beyond, it’s a time to reflect on the rich tapestry of Black heritage and acknowledge the resilience, creativity, and achievements of Black people who often face systemic barriers. Black History Month also offers a space to educate others, challenge stereotypes, and inspire younger generations to embrace their identity and pursue leadership roles. My work with Tai Pawb and WEN Wales aligns with this spirit, as it underscores the need for representation, equity, and the continued fight for social justice.

Who is your Black leader role model?

A standout Black leader role model for me is someone who embodies resilience, vision, and the courage to make a difference in their community. My mother is my greatest motivator (Eka David Udoette). I admire leaders who, have a deep commitment to advocacy, especially within minority communities and marginalised groups, who strive to create systemic change that uplifts and empowers others. These leaders remind me that, through perseverance and a genuine passion for community, impactful change is possible.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

‘Be the change you want to see.’ The best advice I’ve received is to root my work in authenticity and purpose. This has been a guiding principle throughout my journey, reminding me to stay true to my values and keep the needs of the community at the forefront. It’s advice that resonates deeply in my role at Tai Pawb, where the work can be challenging, but staying connected to my “why” fuels the resilience needed to make meaningful strides toward racial equity and justice.

What would you say to budding Black leaders out there?

To budding Black leaders, I’d say: embrace your identity, find strength in your community, and let your unique perspective shine. Leadership isn’t about fitting a mold; it’s about bringing your whole self to the table and pushing for change in ways that resonate with you. Know that your experience has a place in shaping change, your voice matters immensely, and, like the leaders you admire, you too have the potential to inspire and uplift others no matter the level you find yourself. Start there. Remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is building a legacy for those who come after you.

___

You can find out more about our Deeds not Words and Anti-Racism work here: https://www.taipawb.org/anti-racism/

And the Anti-Racist Wales Action plan, here: https://www.gov.wales/anti-racist-wales-action-plan

And the training we offer, here: https://www.taipawb.org/training/

To round off Black History Month, we are celebrating two Black Women Leaders who work with Tai Pawb to promote equality and social justice in housing.
