The New Faces of our Cities: Becoming culturally aware in the 21st Century
Course Synopsis:
The diversity of our cities has changed rapidly since asylum seekers were dispersed out of the Southeast of England in 2005. How much do you know about the cultures, experiences, and world views of the growing refugee communities in your city? This course will raise awareness of the experiences and culture of refugee communities in Wales and the UK.
About the Facilitators:
Tai Pawb has partnered The Gap, a Newport based charity that supports Refugees and Asylum Seekers. The facilitators, Mark, and Claire, have an extensive lived knowledge of refugee’s communities, as well as a strong pedagogical background from their work in education and as foster carers. Mark has 25 years’ experience as a senior teacher at an inner-city primary school in Cardiff, before joining the charity. Claire is currently studying an MA in Refugee Therapeutic Care. They also foster refugee and trafficked young people.

- Half day introductory course
- Full day in-depth course (or 2 half days virtually)
Method of Delivery
Virtually or Classroom
The training is delivered through a multi-media approach and explores personal experiences and extensive knowledge gained through their direct lived experiences of working with Refugee Communities.
Training takes a very flexible approach and can be tailored to suit your requirements – just get in touch.
Target Audience
Any frontline staff engaging with refugee individuals and communities.
A maximum of 10 delegates.
Course Aims
- To inform staff about the reality of asylum issues and what it is like to seek asylum in Wales.
- To raise awareness and promote accurate perceptions about refugees and asylum seekers in Wales.
- To support staff with practical tools to build effective relationships and be trauma informed.
Organisations Should Consider
- Trigger Warning: the sessions may contain material and prompt discussion which may be emotionally and intellectually challenging to engage with.
- This warning is in place to give participants the ability to take charge of their own health and learning.
The training is a social enterprise – all facilitator fees go directly towards the charities work amongst refugees in Newport.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Learn about where asylum seekers, refugees and migrants come from, how and why they leave their homes.
- Learn about the reality and impact of the journey and the asylum process on them.
- Understand the different cultural practices and different world views and how these may differ from Eurocentric world views.
- Understand the barriers that refugees face – cultural, linguistic, and financial.
- Learn about attitudes to mental health, trauma and how to adapt your delivery to be more trauma aware with a focus on refugee communities.
